Earn an Endangered Species Badge!
There is an important endangered species right here in the Salish Sea—Southern resident killer whales—and we have a specialized, interactive program focused on what makes them endangered and what we can do to help.
Our Pod Squad program matches the following criteria for the Endangered Species badge:
1. The terms “rare”, “endangered” and “extinct” are defined. The Canadian Species at Risk Act (SARA) will be introduced.
2. Reasons for the endangered status of resident killer whales and suggestions on how to correct these problems are discussed.
3. The importance of preserving their habitat is discussed.
4. The importance of preserving all plant and animal species, and their habitats, will be demonstrated through a food chain game.
5. A biologist/naturalist will be available to interview.
6. A second important endangered species is on display in the Centre—Northern abalone. The Centre is one of the only aquariums in Canada permitted to display this species.
7. Additional information may be incorporated upon request.
8. Take home and follow-up material can be provided.
Program Length
1 hour (self-guided time available before and/or after program)
Program Cost
$7.00 (+tax) per child, minimum $80.00 fee + tax (maximum group size applies)

Earn a World Conservation Badge!
There are important habitats within the Salish Sea—rocky shores and eelgrass meadows—and we have a specialized program focused on why these habitats are important, what species call them home and how we can protect them.
Our Habitat Heroes program matches the following criteria for the World Conservation badge:
1. Three ocean habitats are explored and compared—rocky intertidal, eelgrass meadows/sandy bottoms and pelagic/open ocean. Learn what plants and animals live there and their adaptations to that particular habitat. What are the advantages and disadvantages?
2. How the changing tides effect where animals and plants live in the intertidal zone will be discussed.
3. The importance of preserving all ocean habitats is stressed. Environmental concerns—pollution, climate change, habitat destruction, unsustainable fishing practices, etc— will be explained.
4. Local endangered species will be introduced.
5. Additional information may be incorporated upon request.
6. Take home and follow-up material can be provided including suggestions for projects, posters or presentations, as well as rules for good behaviour while in and around the ocean.
Program Length
1 hour 15 min (self-guided time available before and/or after program)
Program Cost
$7.00 (+tax) per child, minimum $80.00 fee + tax (maximum group size applies)
