Jamie’s Excellent Adventure: A Discovery of the Arctic’s People, Fauna, and the Effects of Climate Change

Monday February 13th, 2012, 7:00 PM

Jamie Hargreaves, Parkland Secondary School Student

On September 20th, 2011 Jamie Hargreaves set out on an adventure of a lifetime. She and eight other students from across Canada experienced the life of an arctic scientist for eleven days on board the CCGS Amundsen. The trip was sponsored by “Schools on Board”, a unique program of the University of Manitoba and the only one that enables students to be on board a working ship for more than a day. The expedition went through the Amundsen Gulf up to the Beaufort Sea. On this trip, Jamie and the other students witnessed the dramatic beauty of the Arctic and participated in many different types of scientific experiments conducted by the world-class scientists on board. During this special presentation, Jamie will share her experiences and keen observations, using some of her outstanding photographs. She will describe what she learned about the Arctic—its creatures and its people—and offer her unique perspective about the impact of climate change not just on the Arctic but on the Salish Sea and each of us.

Jamie Hargreaves is a Grade 11 student at Parkland Secondary School. She and her family have lived on Vancouver Island for the past 10 years. She is an avid boater, an enthusiastic explorer and a sharp observer. Jamie has a deep love of the ocean and is passionate to do whatever she can to protect it. Her goal is to become a marine biologist. As she learns more about the perils of climate change, she wants to share her knowledge and observations in an effort to motivate others to also commit to protecting our environment and all the creatures with whom we share the planet.
