The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre is a BC Hydro Community Champion.  For the past four years, BC Hydro has sponsored the program which encourages grade 4 to 12 classes around British Columbia to nominate an environmental organization that is making a difference in their local community.  This year, the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre was selected from a record-breaking number of nominations.

Nomination came from a Parkland Secondary class who visited the Ocean Discovery Centre with teacher Patty Golumbia. The class joined Ted Olynyk, BC Hydro’s Vancouver Island Community Relations Manager, for the sponsorship presentation at the Centre on May 13 and recognized BC Hydro for their generous support.

Nearly 100 of the Oceaneers at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre are under the age of 11, and much of their efforts focus on educating other young community residents about the many species unique to the Salish Sea, right here on our door step. It’s peer-to-peer education at its best. “People respect what they know”, says Tina Kelly, Ocean Advocate at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. “We hope that if students learn about our unique underwater ecosystem when they’re young, they’ll continue to respect it as they grow up and teach their own kids how to protect it”.
